The pool itself is somebody else’s work. Everything you actually stand on around it is ours — the deck, the coping, the walls holding the grade back and the planting that softens all of it.
Travertine, pavers or concrete. The deck has to drain away from the water, stay cool enough to stand on, and hold its line where it meets a curve, which is where most pool decks give themselves away.
Coping is the edge you put your hands on every time you get out, so it is cut and set to a tighter tolerance than the rest of the deck. Raised spa walls get built off the same line.
Boulder waterfalls and spillways are structural before they are decorative. What sits behind the stone has to be right, because it is not something you open back up later.
