A driveway carries more weight than anything else on a residential site, and it is the first thing anyone sees. Thickness and reinforcement get set for real vehicle loads rather than to a default, and borders get laid to hold the edge.
Walls fail from water, not from weight. Drainage goes in behind the wall while it is still open — stone, fabric and pipe — and the grade gets set to move water somewhere deliberate instead of toward the house.
